Dr Rita Seery, dressed in a dark jacket, stands next to a white horse in a grassy field, with trees and sunlight providing a serene backdrop.
Rita Seery, PhD, is a Human–Animal Bond specialist whose work explores how relationships with animals, particularly horses, can enhance human wellbeing. She completed her PhD at Queen’s University Belfast in 2026, where her research examined practitioner and service user perspectives across Equine Assisted Services (EAS). Her work highlights both the extensive benefits of EAS and the challenges facing the sector, with a focus on how professionalisation can support ethical, effective practice.

Rita’s lifelong involvement with horses began in childhood and continued through her early career in the equine industry. She holds a BSc in Equine Science and an MSc in Animal Behaviour and Welfare, and has contributed to equine welfare and public education initiatives. Her collaboration with the USPCA led to the development of a long running horse care course aimed at improving welfare standards and community awareness.
As a passionate advocate for the human–animal bond, Rita is committed to promoting understanding of the vital role animals play in supporting mental health, fostering connection, building relationships, and enriching quality of life. Her current publications strengthen the evidence base for EAS, emphasising both human outcomes and equine wellbeing. At the Links Group workshop, she brings lived experience, practical insight, and a collaborative approach to interconnected human and animal wellbeing.

'Even though I ask the question on the DASH form regarding animal abuse, I feel more confident how to respond’.

‘Whilst the sharing of real scenarios from survivors' experiences was confronting and difficult to hear, it really cemented the knowledge and research you were providing’.
