Jersey Vet Team Training – complete your online course soon!

The Links Group speakers’ suitcases are packed, and they’re gearing up for take-off next week.  We’ll be travelling to Jersey to deliver the in-person component of our Jersey Vet Team Training to members of veterinary practices in the island, alongside representatives of key stakeholders from the human services professions.

Domestic abuse is a public health crisis, and The Links Group works to raise awareness of the link between abuse of animals and abuse of people; an important One Health, One Welfare issue.  The independent Violence Against Women and Girls Taskforce report, ‘The issue of violence against women and girls in Jersey’ made 77 recommendations to tackle the identified issues, one of which was “Veterinary professionals in Jersey should receive regular training on the link between animal abuse and domestic abuse, indicators of domestic abuse and the referral pathways available to victim-survivors on the island.”

We have worked closely with the Government of Jersey and key stakeholders in the island to develop a bespoke training course for all members of vet teams working in Jersey.  This collaborative approach ensures that together we have created a hybrid delivery course that is relevant to the legislative and practical concerns of Jersey life, practice, animal welfare and safeguarding of people.

The response of the safeguarding professionals and animal welfare professionals in Jersey has been simply incredible, with clear recognition of the need for appropriate cross-reporting and communication, avoidance of silos, and effective multi-agency working to tackle the crisis of domestic abuse and animal abuse.

We are grateful to them for supporting us in the development of the pre-requisite online modular course, and we are delighted that so many of them will be joining us for the in-person days.  A huge thank you to these stakeholders and colleagues, as well as to the Government of Jersey and their policy officers for recognising the importance of this work and supporting it throughout.

If you’re planning on attending the in-person day in St. Helier on either Friday 12 or Saturday 13 of September, please make sure you’ve completed the appropriate online course, which for vet practice teams is Protecting Animals, Protecting People: Vet Teams – Jersey (~2h),

and for human service professionals is Protecting Animals, Protecting People: in the Home – Jersey (~1h).
